The Story of Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Section titled “The Story of Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies”

Every Sunday afternoon, Grandma Rose would put on her floral apron and start baking. The smell of chocolate chip cookies would drift through the entire house. She had a secret though—she always pulled the cookies out when they looked slightly underdone. “They keep cooking on the pan,” she’d say with a knowing smile.

Papa was a man of few words, but in the kitchen, his actions spoke volumes. His cornbread was legendary—golden, crispy on the edges, tender in the middle. The secret wasn’t just in the recipe. It was the cast iron skillet he’d been seasoning for thirty years.

In our family, Sunday wasn’t Sunday without pot roast. Mom would start it after church, and by the time we got home, the house would smell like heaven. What made it special wasn’t just the food—it was the ritual of gathering together.

Nana swore her chicken noodle soup had magical healing properties. Sick with a cold? Nana’s soup. Rough day at school? Nana’s soup. Looking back, maybe it wasn’t magic. Maybe it was just love, simmered for hours.
